OPINION: Great Destination but not taking care of their Animals – Antigua News Room

    To the Editor,

Antigua and Barbuda is routinely celebrated across the globe as a world-class luxury travel destination. Renowned for its 365 breathtaking beaches, high-end resorts, and unmatched Caribbean hospitality, the island successfully markets itself as a flawless paradise.

Yet, beneath this glossy postcard exterior lies a heartbreaking reality that international visitors and compassionate locals can no longer ignore: the pervasive neglect and suffering of the island’s stray and vulnerable animal population.

A quick glance at local community rescue networks paints a starkly different picture of paradise. Every single day, dedicated independent rescuers and grassroots organizations most notably Dogs and Cats of Antigua are on the front lines fighting a quiet war against animal suffering.

The images shared daily by locals tell the real, unfiltered story of the plight of these animals. Sickly pups fighting severe mange, malnutrition, and neglect are regularly pulled from the streets.

Local feeds are constantly filled with photos of emergency vet runs, “tin food deliveries” funded out of pocket by generous citizens, and desperate pleas to identify the locations of abandoned, starving puppies left on the roadsides.

While grassroots heroes work around the clock to foster, medicate, feed, and rehome these animals, a fundamental question must be asked: Why is the burden of animal welfare falling almost entirely on heavily strained non-profits and private citizens?

A destination cannot truly claim the title of “paradise” when starving, diseased, and abused animals are treated as a normal part of the landscape. It is a harsh reality that is increasingly jarring to the tourists Antigua fights so hard to attract.

Visitors come to the island expecting luxury, but many leave with traumatic memories of seeing skeletal dogs begging on beaches or roadpacks of neglected animals suffering from untreated illnesses.

In a digital age, these experiences quickly turn into negative reviews and bad press, threatening the very tourism industry the economy relies on.

While local clinics and advocates continually urge pet owners to make responsible animal care a priority to prevent outbreaks of disease, public education is only one piece of the puzzle. Antigua actually possesses framework legislation, such as the Animal Health Act, which explicitly prohibits the maltreatment and neglect of animals.

What is severely lacking is enforcement. Cruelty and abandonment continue with absolute impunity, and the government has yet to match its political promises with sustained financial backing or legal crackdowns on abusers.

If Antigua wishes to maintain its reputation as a premier global destination, it must start caring for the smallest and most vulnerable beings among us.

    We need:

Stricter Enforcement of Animal Laws: Police and courts must treat animal cruelty and abandonment as serious offenses.

Government-Funded Spay and Neuter Mandates: Active state support to curb the overpopulation crisis humanely.

Institutional Support for Rescuers: Financial aid or subsidized veterinary resources for the registered shelters doing the heavy lifting.

We are incredibly grateful for the local angels and organizations like Dogs and Cats of Antigua who spend their own time and money to give these neglected animals a second chance at life. But charity alone is a band-aid on a gaping wound. It is time for the government, the tourism sector, and the wider community to step up.

True paradise shouldn’t just look good from a resort balcony it should be a place of safety and compassion for all living creatures.
