The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) has launched a new partnership with the Lupus Association of Antigua and Barbuda, marked by a donation of EC$2,500 and a commitment to advancing awareness, education, and support for those affected by the chronic autoimmune disease.

The presentation ceremony, held on Friday, coincided with POP (Put on Purple) Day – an activity aimed at raising awareness about lupus.

General Secretary of the ABWU, David Massiah, said the presentation was more than a one-time gesture and expressed hope that the collaboration would foster greater awareness, encourage early detection, and provide support and comfort to persons affected by lupus throughout Antigua and Barbuda.

“Today, we are not simply making a presentation. We are making a commitment rooted in solidarity,” Massiah stated.

“The ABWU is proud to stand alongside the Lupus Association as we work together to raise awareness about a condition that affects many individuals and families within our nation, including workers who continue to face the daily challenges associated with Lupus while striving to earn a living and care for their loved ones.”

Massiah noted that lupus is often misunderstood because many of its effects are not immediately visible, despite the serious physical, emotional, mental, and financial challenges faced by those living with the illness.

President of the Lupus Association, Linda Mussington, welcomed the partnership and anticipates reaching more young people with information about the disease.

“With the Antigua Workers’ Union, I know that the exposure is going to really take us further, because we have also seen that there are so many young people in Antigua that have Lupus,” Mussington said.

Assistant Secretary of the Association, Stacey Ladoo, thanked the Union for its support and commended the ABWU for its longstanding service to workers and the wider community as it celebrates its 59th anniversary.
