The Antigua and Barbuda Amateur Volleyball Association (ABAVA) League continued on Saturday, May 16, with an exciting slate of Division 2 and Division 1 matches at the YMCA Sports Complex, highlighted by Stoneville handing Da Squad their first defeat of the season in a dramatic five-set women’s encounter.
In Division 2 Women’s Game 67, Schools defeated Starz 2, sponsored by Hidow Caribbean, in straight sets after a composed performance built on strong teamwork and consistent play.
Schools controlled key moments in both sets to secure the win with scores of 25-21 and 25-22, taking the match 2-0.
Division 1 Women’s Game 68 produced one of the most entertaining matches of the season as Stoneville, sponsored by Theatric Lighting & Joma, battled Da Squad, sponsored by Cool & Smooth/Joma, in a tense five-set showdown.
Da Squad claimed the opening set 25-18, but Stoneville responded with a narrow 27-25 victory in the second set. Da Squad regained the advantage by taking the third set 25-18 before Stoneville levelled the match with a 25-20 fourth-set win.
Stoneville then held their composure in the deciding set, dominating 15-8 to complete the 3-2 victory.
The result marked Da Squad’s first loss of the season, ending their unbeaten run.
In Men’s Game 69 in Division 1, Pytonz, sponsored by ZAMINE SHIPPING & ABI INSURANCE, produced a disciplined performance to defeat Stoneville, sponsored by Theatric Lighting & Joma, in straight sets.
Pytonz edged competitive sets 25-23, 25-20 and 25-23 to secure the 3-0 victory.
ABAVA said the league continues to showcase top local volleyball talent and competitive action as teams battle through the season.
The next round of matches is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, at the YMCA Sports Complex.
Division 1 women’s action begins at 7 p.m. with Jets taking on Starz 1, followed by the Division 1 men’s contest between Renegades and Stoneville at 8 p.m.
The association is encouraging supporters to attend and continue backing local volleyball.
