Browne Signals More Senate Changes as ABLP Pushes for Younger and More Female Leadership

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says additional Senate changes could take place later this year as the governing Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party continues efforts to expand opportunities for younger people and women in national leadership.

Speaking on Pointe FM, Browne said the recent Senate appointments reflected a broader transition strategy aimed at preparing a new generation of political leaders while maintaining institutional experience within the government.

The prime minister indicated that some older senators could eventually be replaced as the process of political renewal continues.

His comments come following several recent Senate appointments after the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s landslide victory in the April 30 general election.

Among the appointments was Shaquan O’Neil, who at 22 became the youngest senator in the country’s history.

The Upper House also includes younger female senators such as Angelica O’Donoghue and Tiffany Strann-Peters, while Shenella Govia returned to the Senate.

Browne said the party wants to ensure greater representation for younger people and women while continuing to balance renewal with experience within the administration.

The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party secured a fourth consecutive term in office after winning 15 of the country’s 17 parliamentary seats in the April 30 polls.
