Governor General Sir Rodney Williams paid tribute to Senator-designate Jamilla Kirwan’s resilience on Monday as she returned to the Senate during a period of personal grief following the recent death of her mother.

Speaking during Kirwan’s swearing-in ceremony at Government House, Sir Rodney acknowledged the emotional significance of the occasion, noting that the newly appointed independent senator was taking the oath of office while her family prepared to lay her mother to rest later this week.

“Today’s occasion is also touched by personal sorrow,” the Governor General said. “Even as Senator-designate Kirwan prepares to take the oath of office, she does so during a period of bereavement following the passing of her beloved mother.”

Sir Rodney described Kirwan’s late mother as one of her “greatest supporters and strongest sources of encouragement,” while extending condolences to the senator and her family.

The Governor General said Kirwan’s willingness to continue serving despite her loss reflected the kind of courage and resilience that inspires others.

“Yet, even in grief, there are examples of strength that inspire us,” he said.

He added that resilience often grows from family values and upbringing rather than circumstance alone.

“There’s courage that comes not only from experience, but from upbringing — not only from circumstance, but from the values, resilience and determination passed on from one generation to the other,” Sir Rodney said.

According to the Governor General, Kirwan was entering the Upper House carrying not only her own ambitions, but also the enduring influence of her mother.

“Senator-designate Kirwan moves forward today carrying not only her own aspirations, but also the enduring influence and spirit of a mother whose support helped shape the woman that she has become,” he said.

The ceremony marked Kirwan’s return to the Senate after she was first appointed as an independent senator on November 27, 2025. Sir Rodney said her initial period of service, though brief, demonstrated her ability to contribute meaningfully to national discourse and legislative review.

He also praised the role of family support in public life, describing public service as demanding and emotionally taxing.

“To her family and friends gathered here this afternoon, I want to thank you for your support and encouragement, because public service is demanding,” Sir Rodney said.

Kirwan later spoke emotionally about her mother’s influence, saying she intended to continue walking in the legacy her mother had built for her and her children.
