Governor General Sir Rodney Williams today paid an emotional tribute to the late former Senator Mary Clare Hurst during the swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed senators, describing her as a dedicated public servant whose contribution to Antigua and Barbuda spanned politics, tourism, public administration and parliamentary life.

Before senators were formally sworn in, Sir Rodney paused the proceedings to acknowledge Hurst’s passing earlier this week, telling those gathered that it was fitting to recognize someone who had made a significant contribution to national development.

“Miss Hurst devoted many of the years of her life to public service and national development, serving Antigua and Barbuda with commitment, discipline, and distinction,” Sir Rodney said.

He said her work in parliamentary affairs, political organization, tourism development and public administration earned her widespread respect across many sectors of national life.

The Governor General highlighted several milestones from Hurst’s career, including her historic role as the first woman to serve as General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, prompting applause inside the chamber.

Sir Rodney also reflected on her service in multiple senior positions, including government senator, Leader of Government Business in the Senate, Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism and Economic Development, and chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority.

“Beyond the offices she held, Miss Hurst will also be remembered for her passion for mentorship and youth development and the strengthening of public institutions,” he said.

He described her as “resilient, compassionate, professional, and deeply committed to the advancement of Antigua and Barbuda.”

Sir Rodney said it was important that as the nation welcomed new senators into the Upper House, it also reflected on the legacy of someone who helped shape the institution and contributed significantly to the country’s parliamentary and democratic development.

“On behalf of Her Excellency Lady Williams and myself, I extend sincere condolences to the family, friends, supporters, and colleagues of the late Mary Clare Hurst,” he said. “May her contribution to national life continue to inspire future generations, and may she rest in peace.”

The tribute came at the start of a ceremonial sitting marking the appointment and swearing-in of new senators following the general election. Sir Rodney described the occasion as “a very significant moment” in the constitutional life of the nation, reflecting “continuity, stability, service and confidence in the institutions that underpin our parliamentary democracy.”
