UPP Leader Jamale Pringle says a United Progressive Party government would prevent cabinet ministers from competing with private businesses, arguing that the current system disadvantages entrepreneurs.

Speaking at a rally in All Saints, Pringle told members of the business community that government officials should not be involved in activities that undermine private enterprise.

“The United Progressive Party will not allow cabinet members to compete with you,” he said.

He added that his administration would also move to eliminate practices that he said make it difficult for businesses to operate independently.

“We will not ask you for a percentage of your shares in order to make the process easier for you,” Pringle said.

Pringle framed the proposal as part of a broader effort to create a fairer business environment, where entrepreneurs can operate without political interference.

He said a UPP administration would ensure that applications for tax concessions on startups, expansions and acquisitions are handled “fairly and professionally,” with local investors treated on the same basis as foreign investors.

The opposition leader also pledged to enforce procurement rules, saying his government would “stamp out nepotism, cronyism, and unfair awarding of government contracts.”

The measures, he said, are aimed at restoring confidence among business owners and creating a level playing field across the economy.

The general election is scheduled for April 30.
