The prosecution’s case in the Nigel Christian murder trial closed Friday after defence attorneys challenged the lead investigator over what they described as major gaps in the police probe.

Saleim Harrigan, Wayne Thomas and Lasean Bully are accused of abducting the Customs officer from his McKinnons home on July 10, 2020, and killing him later that day.

Under cross-examination, the investigator acknowledged that several leads were not pursued, including forensic analysis of skid marks, blood spatter and bullet trajectory, as well as call records and CCTV footage.

Attention also turned to a key witness whose status shifted during the investigation and whose DNA appeared on evidence, but was not fully examined. Questions were raised about items said to link Christian to the scene, with no DNA found on a bag identified by his girlfriend.

While prosecutors rely on DNA evidence connecting the accused to recovered items, the investigator conceded uncertainties around aspects of the case.

The defence is expected to begin its case on Monday.
