The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus says it is strengthening its role in Antigua and Barbuda through community engagement and new academic programmes.

In an interview with state media, marketing officer Shavar Maloney said the campus recently completed a series of activities, including a clean-up campaign that removed thousands of pounds of waste and a 5K run involving about 300 participants.

He said the initiatives aim to encourage healthier lifestyles alongside academic and professional development. “It’s about being happy, being healthy and moving,” he added.

The campus has also deepened ties with Five Islands Primary School and local businesses. Mr Maloney said the institution now works closely with the school, describing the relationship as one of mentorship.

Applications are open for programmes in areas such as technology, healthcare, business, criminology and education, with regional partnerships also being developed. Mr Maloney said discussions are under way with T.A. Marryshow Community College in Grenada to create pathways for students into the criminology programme.

The university is also preparing to launch a new law degree in collaboration with the University of the West Indies Mona Campus, offering training in areas including media, intellectual property and commercial law.

Meanwhile, its “Walk-In Wednesdays” initiative has resumed, providing support for prospective students with applications and admissions.

The campus is preparing for summer orientation and expects about 200 graduates this year, as it continues to position itself as a key partner in national and regional development.
