Motorists in St John’s are facing increased fines as traffic police step up enforcement against illegal parking in the capital.

Officers have been patrolling key areas, issuing tickets to drivers parked in no-parking zones, on sidewalks, and at blocked intersections. Authorities say the move is aimed at easing congestion and improving pedestrian safety amid growing traffic pressures in the city.

The increased enforcement has been most visible along busy commercial streets, where several vehicles were seen being ticketed within short periods during recent patrols.

Police say the crackdown is necessary to restore order, particularly during peak hours when St John’s experiences heavy congestion. They have warned that continued breaches could result in tougher action, including vehicle towing.

However, some motorists argue the problem is driven by a shortage of parking spaces in the capital, especially during the daytime rush.

Despite this, authorities are urging drivers to follow traffic laws, saying illegal parking disrupts traffic flow and poses risks to other road users.

Police say heightened enforcement will continue in the coming days as part of ongoing efforts to address the issue.
