Statement from the Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda Inc. Regarding the Devastating Fire Affecting Local Doctors
The Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda Inc. (MAAB) expresses its profound sadness and deep concern following the devastating fire that ravaged the Gambles Medical Centre in St. John’s, severely impacting the offices and infrastructure of several businesses and medical offices.
We stand in solidarity with Dr. Bernard Evan-Wong (Dentist), Dr. Hanybal Yazigi (Oncologist), Dr. Leon B. Stevens (Obstetrician and Gynaecologist), Dr. Sharon Cordner (Internist & Rheumatologist), Dr. Edda Hadeed (Paediatrician), and Dr. Asha Robins (Surgeon) during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of their physical spaces, critical equipment, and years of patient records is not just a personal loss, but a significant blow to the healthcare landscape of Antigua and Barbuda.
The dedication and compassion these doctors have shown to their patients is immeasurable, and to see their livelihood and ability to provide care disrupted by such an unforeseen event is truly heartbreaking. We cannot overstate the impact this will have on the patients who rely on their specialized expertise for their well-being.
In the face of adversity, the medical community must remain united. We urge all our members, healthcare partners, and the entire nation to join us in extending our heartfelt empathy and compassion to Dr. Evan-Wong, Dr. Yazigi, Dr. Stevens, Dr. Cordner, Dr. Hadeed, and Dr. Robins and their dedicated staff.
Our thoughts are with them, their families, and their patients. We are confident that with our collective strength and support, they will overcome this adversity and continue their noble mission of healing.
Dr. Alafea Stevens
President
Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda Inc.
