Foreign Minister Greene Holds Bilateral Meeting with Cyprus’ Special Envoy for Multilateralism
The Honourable E.P. Chet Greene, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Barbuda Affairs of Antigua and Barbuda, held a bilateral meeting on 10th March with His Excellency Andreas Kakouris, Ambassador and Special Envoy for Multilateralism for the Republic of Cyprus.
Minister Greene welcomed the opportunity to engage with Ambassador Kakouris and reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between Antigua and Barbuda and the Republic of Cyprus. He noted that both countries share a deep commitment to multilateral cooperation, international law, and sustainable development, particularly within the Commonwealth and broader international community.
During the meeting, Minister Greene conveyed Antigua and Barbuda’s best wishes to His Excellency on his candidature for the Presidency of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, 2026 – 2027 term. Minister Greene noted that effective leadership of the General Assembly will be especially important in the current global context, underscoring the need for strong multilateral leadership to advance the priorities of small and vulnerable states, including climate action and sustainable development.
Discussions also focused on preparations for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2026, which Antigua and Barbuda will host in St. John’s from 1st to 4th November 2026. Minister Greene highlighted plans for a high-level side event on ‘Blue Finance and Innovation’, which will explore opportunities for sustainable ocean development, including marine conservation, sustainable fisheries, ocean-based renewable energy, and investment in blue economy sectors.
Recognising Cyprus’ strong maritime heritage and growing focus on the blue economy, Minister Greene welcomed potential collaboration with Cyprus, including technical expertise and participation from Cypriot institutions and experts in the upcoming policy dialogue.
The two officials also discussed opportunities for technical cooperation in the lead-up to CHOGM 2026, including the sharing of best practices in conference management, multilateral event coordination, and programming related to sustainable development and ocean governance.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation between Antigua and Barbuda and Cyprus and expressed optimism that continued engagement will further deepen bilateral ties and collaboration in international fora.
Foreign Minister Greene was accompanied by Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill, High Commissioner of the Antigua and Barbuda High Commission in London and Ms. Chantal Phillip, Minister Counsellor.
