Antigua and Barbuda’s hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in November is expected to create significant opportunities for local businesses.

Colin Knight, a member of the CHOGM Business Forum Task Force, said organisers are working to ensure local businesses benefit from the economic activity generated by the event.

Speaking on the Browne & Browne Show, Knight said efforts are being made to encourage delegates to stay at local hotels, guest houses and Airbnb properties.

He said the expected influx of visitors would also increase demand for food, transportation, entertainment and other services, providing opportunities for small businesses and service providers.

Knight described CHOGM as part of the government’s push to expand conference tourism and diversify the country’s tourism industry beyond its traditional sun, sea and sand offering.

The November meeting is expected to bring leaders and delegates from the Commonwealth’s 56 member states, along with business executives, civil society representatives and youth and women’s groups.

Knight said the longer-term goal is to increase accommodation capacity, strengthen local businesses and create new revenue opportunities that continue beyond the conference.
