The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is exploring a strategic partnership with one of China’s leading eye care institutions as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen ophthalmic services and improve access to quality eye care for the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

Minister for Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs, Michael Joseph, accompanied by Medical Director of the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, Dr. Shivon Belle-Javis and Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to the Peoples Republic of China, Clement Antonio, visited the HE Vision Group, a premier eye care institution in China recognized for its comprehensive approach to ophthalmic care, education, and research.

During the visit, the delegation toured the institution’s network of community clinics, hospitals, and university facilities, with a team led by Dr. Wei He, where they observed the delivery of eye care services at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. The delegation also learned about the institution’s integrated model of patient care, professional training, and research, which has established the He Vision Group as a leader in eye health in China.

Speaking on the outcomes of the visit, Minister Joseph said the discussions opened the door to meaningful collaboration that could significantly strengthen eye care services in Antigua and Barbuda.

“We were particularly impressed with the comprehensive services offered by the He Vision Group and their commitment to training the next generation of eye care professionals. We have agreed to explore opportunities through the university to provide scholarships for Antiguans and Barbudans who wish to pursue studies in optometry. We also discussed strengthening our national capacity through the provision of equipment that will enable us to increase eye screening throughout the country.”

The Minister further noted that one of the key factors behind the institution’s success is its extensive training facilities, which support the continuous development of highly skilled eye care professionals while advancing innovation in ophthalmic medicine.

The proposed partnership also includes collaboration aimed at enhancing Antigua and Barbuda’s eye care infrastructure and expanding access to specialized services. These initiatives align with the Ministry’s long-term vision of establishing a regional eye hospital in Antigua and Barbuda, capable of serving not only the nation but the wider Caribbean region.

Minister Joseph emphasized that investing in education, technology, and strategic international partnerships is essential to improving healthcare delivery and ensuring that citizens have access to world-class eye care services.
