Prime Minister Gaston Browne has expressed willingness to support efforts to revive horse racing at Cassada Gardens, but said an Antigua Turf Club proposal must go through the sports minister for Cabinet consideration.
Responding to a listener’s question on Saturday’s Browne and Browne Show, Browne said the government would consider assistance within its resources.
“Anything we can do within reason, within our capacity to help the turf club, we’ll do so,” he said.
The listener asked whether Cabinet had approved the club’s proposal and how the government would assist the development.
“We want to see the return of horse racing at Cassada Gardens, but we want it to be better than it was before,” the message stated.
The listener also praised the club’s president for working toward the sport’s revival and urged the government to support the effort.
Browne did not confirm that Cabinet had approved the proposal. Instead, he outlined the route it should take for a decision.
“You need to go to the Minister of Sports, and the Minister of Sports will present to the Cabinet,” he said. “The Cabinet will make a determination.”
He did not specify what assistance the government might provide, announce a funding commitment or give a timetable for the return of racing.
His response indicated support for considering the initiative, with any government involvement dependent on the proposal being presented to Cabinet.
