Browne Says Man in Earlier Murder-Suicide Was a ‘Known Criminal’

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says one of the men involved in a murder-suicide in his constituency earlier this year was known to authorities for alleged criminal activity and had previously been implicated in another fatal shooting.

Browne made the disclosure Saturday on the Browne and Browne Show while discussing gun violence and the circulation of illegal firearms.

According to Browne, the man had been implicated in a shooting at a supermarket in which another person was killed and was later granted bail.

“I’m told that this dude was a known criminal,” Browne said.

The prime minister did not provide further evidence during the programme to support the claim, attributing the information to what he had been told.

Browne raised the case while encouraging residents to report people known to possess illegal firearms, arguing that removing weapons from the streets could prevent further violence.

He also used the case to renew his criticism of what he considers an overly lenient approach to people accused of serious gun offences, saying repeat offenders can pose a continuing danger to the wider community.
