Prime Minister Gaston Browne is urging residents to help authorities get illegal guns off the streets by confidentially reporting friends, relatives or neighbours known to possess them.

Speaking on his weekly radio programme over the weekend, Browne said information provided by members of the public has already led to the recovery of several firearms.

He reminded residents that a long-standing programme offers cash rewards for information leading authorities to illegal weapons, while protecting the identities of informants. Tips may also be submitted anonymously by people concerned about retaliation or exposure.

Browne said remaining silent could allow another violent incident to occur, while reporting a weapon could prevent a shooting and potentially save lives—including that of the person carrying the gun.

The appeal follows a recent increase in violent crime and comes ahead of a national security meeting scheduled for Monday. Officials are expected to consider further measures to combat the surge.

Browne said reducing violence will require an “all-of-society approach,” including stronger cooperation between residents and law enforcement.
