Several Antiguans and Barbudans who were stranded in Punta Cana after the cancellation of a LIAT flight have returned home following an emergency recovery operation.

The travellers, who had been due to fly back to Antigua on Sunday, were informed that their weekly return flight had been cancelled after leaving their hotels for the airport. With only one scheduled LIAT service each week on the route, many faced the prospect of remaining in the Dominican Republic for several more days.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne, LIAT management and aviation officials worked together to arrange a special overnight flight to bring the passengers home. Throughout the disruption, LIAT remained in contact with those affected and apologised for the inconvenience.

The recovery flight arrived safely in Antigua early on Monday after airport authorities coordinated with runway rehabilitation crews at V.C. Bird International Airport to accommodate the late-night landing.

The operation spared passengers the cost of extended hotel stays and other unexpected expenses, while highlighting the cooperation between the Government, LIAT and airport officials in resolving the situation.
