Minister of Social and Urban Transformation Kiz Johnson is urging Antiguans and Barbudans to honor the nation’s oldest citizens, describing centenarians as a valuable source of wisdom, resilience and experience.
In a message marking Centenarians Week 2026, Johnson said the observance provides an opportunity to recognize not only those who have reached 100 years of age, but also the families, caregivers, healthcare workers and community organizations that support them.
“Our centenarians have contributed immeasurably to the development of our communities and our nation,” Johnson said. “Through their work, sacrifice, family, leadership, and commitment to community life, they have helped lay the foundation upon which subsequent generations continue to build.”
Johnson said the ministry remains committed to creating communities that are inclusive, accessible and supportive of older persons.
“We must continue to foster environments where seniors remain connected, engaged, respected, and valued members of our society,” she said.
She also encouraged greater interaction between young people and senior citizens, noting that younger generations can benefit from learning from the experiences of those who have lived through a century of change.
“The wisdom of our elders remains one of our greatest national resources,” Johnson said.
The minister extended congratulations to all centenarians and their families and wished them a joyful and meaningful Centenarians Week.
