More than 50 supervisors and department heads recently strengthened their knowledge in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) during an intensive three-day workshop hosted by the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU). The training formed part of the union’s ongoing commitment to equipping workers with the knowledge and skills needed to create safer workplaces.

The sessions, which covered critical areas such as Occupational Hygiene, Chemical Safety, and Air Quality, were facilitated by Microbiologist, Dr. Linroy Christian. Additionally, Deputy Labour Commissioner Pascal Kentish led discussions on Division C of the Antigua & Barbuda Labour Code, ensuring participants gained a deeper understanding of workplace rights and safety regulations.

ABWU Training Coordinator, Hazel Luke, highlighted the importance of addressing air quality concerns in occupational health.

“Air quality is a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of workplace safety that impacts the mental, emotional and physical health and wellbeing of workers,” Luke explained. “In planning this training, we focused on identifying knowledge gaps and ensuring workers receive the information they need to stay safe and minimize the health hazards and risks associated with poor air quality in the workplace and even at home,” Luke added.

Participants praised the workshop for its practical approach and real-world applications.

“The training helped me see how safety principles apply to my everyday work environment,” one attendee shared.

Another participant noted, “I never fully understood how air quality affects health, but now I’ll be more aware of my surroundings.”

At the end of the workshop, attendees were required to complete an assessment. Official certificates will be issued during the union’s anniversary celebrations in May.

Meanwhile, young workers are next in line to receive OSH training in Air Quality, Occupational Hygiene and Chemical Safety later this month.
