Health officials in Antigua and Barbuda have joined the regional medical community in mourning the passing of Dr Gemma Chery, a respected public health advocate and physician.

Dr Chery, who served as the Pan American Health Organisation’s (PAHO) Country Programme Specialist for Antigua and Barbuda, passed away on Tuesday, just days before her 48th birthday.

Sir Molwyn Joseph, the Minister of Health, along with Permanent Secretaries Ena Dalso-Henry and Stacey Gregg-Paige, as well as the management and staff of the Ministry of Health, have extended their condolences to Dr Chery’s family, friends, and colleagues.

They recognised her significant contributions to the nation’s healthcare system and her role in advancing key public health initiatives.

“Dr Chery was an instrumental force in strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s healthcare landscape. Her dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to public health led to the successful implementation of critical health projects that have positively impacted the lives of our citizens. We are deeply saddened by her passing and express our gratitude for her invaluable service to our nation,” Minister Joseph said.

Dr Chery made notable contributions throughout the Caribbean, working in St Lucia, Guyana, Suriname, and Antigua and Barbuda. She was widely respected for her data-driven approach, compassionate leadership, and relentless advocacy for improved healthcare systems.

The Ministry of Health has acknowledged Dr Chery’s legacy and pledged to continue the work she championed in public health and wellness.

May her soul rest in peace.
